In July 2003 Ormiston Wire installed a Proven WT2500 wind turbine and 120 solar photo-voltaic panels at their Middlesex factory to compliment other energy efficiency measures, including the use of energy efficient light bulbs, high efficiency condensing boilers and plastic skylights.  The turbine and solar panels produce electricity for on-site use, with any surplus sold back to Ecotricity, their electricity supplier. They are currently involved in a trial funded by the DTI into the efficiency of their turbine and solar panels.

The WT2500 2.5kW wind turbine has a 3.5m rotor diameter and is designed to capture energy from winds between 5 and 150mph and features an advanced blade design which twists to limit output in high winds. The turbine feeds unregulated power into a Windy Boy grid connect inverter which in turn is connected to the distribution board at standard 230Vac 50Hz. This is one of the first industrial applications of small wind turbines in the UK.

Despite expressing support from the outset and recognising the scheme’s contribution to its Local Agenda 21 policy, the local planning authority, Hounslow Council, took about 10 months to agree the planning application.
