Risk of lightning strikes

In extreme conditions, a lighting strike on a turbine may cause damage and flying debris.

In extreme conditions, a lighting strike on a turbine may cause damage and flying debris. While this is highly unlikely, the consequences could be fatal.

This is really a question of risk management and risk assessment: how can the risk be minimised and does the benefit outweigh the risk?

Entrenched opponents of wind energy may argue that no risk can be justified; responsible operators of wind turbines will take the risks seriously and show what steps are taken to keep them to a minimum.
